Junji Ito
page content last updated July 11, 2018

Like many popular artists, Ito has a complex bibliography where the same or related short pieces appear in various volumes of different names.  It seems simplest here to list each collection separately.  Happily, I found what was once a good source for contents, 地獄湯−伊藤潤二’s Fan Site, so the list is fairly comprehensive.  But please be aware that if you are looking for a particular work or series of works (Tomie, for example), you may need to check through the entire list, including the "Other Works," to find all the related pieces!

ComicsOne released the first three volumes of this series in English as The Junji Ito Horror Comic CollectionTomie (volumes 1 and 2) and Flesh Colored Horror (volume 3).  The Junji Ito Horror Comic Collection is currently being distributed by DrMaster Publications.

The French series Tomié, from Tonkam, now Delcourt / Tonkam, is apparently made up of the first two volumes of this series along with Tomie Again (see below).  Tonkam also released a Junji Ito Collection following the volumes of this series, only skipping the two Tomie volumes that they already released:  Le Mystère de la Chair, Le Voleur de Visages, Le Journal de Soïchi, Le Journal Maudit de Soïchi, La Femme Limace, Les Fruits Sanglants, Hallucinations, La Maison de Poupées, La Ville sans Rue, La Flle Perverse, Le Cirque des Horreurs, Le Tunnel, Le Mort Amoureux, and Frankenstein.

Collections of Ito's favorite works, the volumes also contained commentary by the author and other material.  Works included in the first volume were Chuuko Record* (中古レコード), Kanki* (寒気), Kubitsuri Kikyuu (首吊り気球), Fashion Model (ファッションモデル), Ayatsuri Yashiki (あやつり屋敷), Gaka (画家), Nagai Yume* (長い夢), Go-senzo-sama* (ご先祖様), and Glyceride* (グリセリド).  The VIZ publication Shiver:  Junji Ito Selected Stories appears to be an English translation of this volume.

The second volume contained Kubi Gensou (首幻想), Ijimekko (いじめっ娘), Bohyou no Machi (墓標の町), Umeku Haisuikan (うめく排水管), Mimi Kosuri Suru Onna* (耳擦りする女), Namekuji Shoujo (なめくじ少女), Niku-iro no Kai (肉色の怪), Uwasa* (), Yuruyaka na Wakare* (緩やかな別れ), and Miirareta Souichi* (魅入られた双一).

Asahi Shimbun released these volumes electronically.

Other Works:

Ito has done fewer men's titles, although obviously with success.  Uzumaki (うずまき) started out in Shogakukan (小学館)’s Big Comics (ビッグコミックス), was completed in three volumes under Spirits Kaiki Comics (スピリッツ怪奇コミックス), then rereleased in a single volume under Big Comics Wide, and another under Big Comics Special.  Uzumaki was also made into a live-action movie, which had a limited U.S. run under the title Whirlpool.  Two other titles, Gyo (ギョ) 1-2 and Jigokuboshi Remina (地獄星レミナ), were also released under Big Comics.  Black Paradox (ブラックパラドクス) was put out by Shogakukan under Big Spirits Comics Special.  Ito, together with Masaru Satou (佐藤優) and Takashi Nagasaki (長崎尚志), coauthored the political exposition Yuukoku no Rasputin (憂国のラスプーチン) 1-6, which appeared under Big Comics.  One volume of Yuukoku no Rasputin was also released under Shogakukan's My First Wide Premium (マイファーストワイドプレミアム).  Osamu Dazai (太宰治)'s novel Ningen Shikkaku (人間失格) was adapted by Ito in three volumes under Big Comics Original (ビッグコミックス オリジナル).  Uzumaki and Gyo were translated into English by VIZ.

Kai, Sasu (怪、刺す), a work authored by Hirokatsu Kihara (木原浩勝), was released under Shogakukan's Shonen Sunday Comics Special.  Ito's only other boys' comic was also his first release from Akita Shoten (秋田書店):  Youkai Kyoushitsu* (溶解教室), put out under Shounen Champion Comics Extra Motto! (少年チャンピオンコミックスエクストラ もっと!).

Ito contributed to the Kodansha (講談社) cat anthology Neko Neko Neko!!! (猫・ ネコ・ ねこ!!!).  Rather surprisingly, Kodansha published a separate volume in this vein, Itou Junji no Neko Nikki:  Yon & Muu (伊藤潤二の猫日記 よん&むー), released in English as Junji Ito's Cat Diary:  Yon & Mu.

The movies Kakashi, Kubitsuri Kikyuu, Oshikiri* (押切), Shibito no Koiwazurai, and Kao Dorobou* were based on Ito’s girls’ comics.  A dramatization of Chuuko Record* was included as part of the Dramadas TV series under the name Senritsu no Senritsu (戦慄の旋律).  Ito's Tomie series was also made into a series of live-action movies:  Tomie, Tomie Replay, Tomie Re-Birth, and Tomie Saishuu Shou:  Kindan no Kajitsu (富江 最終章 禁断の果実).  The second film was novelized by Fumihiko Iino (飯野文彦), along with the Tomie Replay Perfect Book, a "making of" book by Yoshiaki Washizu (鷲巣義明), both published by Asahi Sonorama.  There is also mention of a Tomie "Manga Video," although this may refer to one of the other films.

The live-action film Tomio (富夫) was both written and directed by Ito.  Aniplex (アニプレックス) released an animated version of Gyo as part of its Anime Bunko (アニメ文庫) series.  Studio Deen (スタジオディーン) produced a Junji Ito "Collection" (伊藤潤二『コレクション』) animated TV series and two associated videos that included adaptations of the girls' horror pieces Souichi no Katte na Noroi, Jigoku no Ningyou Sou*, Fashion Model, Nagai Yume*, Yotsutsuji no Bishounen*, Namekuji Shoujo, Kanki*, Ayatsuri Yashiki, Oshikiri Idan, Nuno-sei Kyoushi, Tonari no Mado*, Yuruyaka na Wakare*, Chuuko Record*, Michi no Nai Machi, Go-senzo-sama*, Circus ga Kita*, Gaka, Chitamagi, Glyceride, Hashi*, Chousizen Tenkousei*, Kakashi, Kai Dan, Uwasa*, and, of course, Tomie.
