Makai Tenshou began as a novel by Fuutarou Yamada (山田風太郎). It was then made into a live-action film, a boys’ comic drawn by Ken Ishikawa (石川賢), then a two-part animated video series, (released in the US by ADV Films under the title Ninja Resurrection). Two further comics, drawn by Shōko Toba (鳥羽笙子) and Shinzou Tomi* (とみ新蔵) preceeded this one.
